Juniper Hill Candles manufacture hand made premium fragranced candles. Their craftsmanship is quite incredible to behold.
We were contacted by them with a view to developing an online presence in the form of an eCommerce site.
Based in the Southeast didn't present an issue as Clarity IT already provided all their IT support services. What we did know were they are a company renown for their attention to detail and quality control. When we first spoke to their board of directors about the eCommerce project it was very obvious that they had a crystal clear vision of what they wanted the site to do and look like.
Having already developed a very strong brand we were briefed with concept artwork that they'd already produced. Our task was to ensure this artwork was transferred in minute detail to the screens of internet users.
That sounds a lot easier than it actually is. When you have to account for different types of web browsers, screen resolutions and PC/Mac/Linux platforms it can be a challenge to achieve consistency to say the least. With clear ideas about how each screen (and sub-section of a screen) should look we began the task of mapping their concept into code and ensuring that we were able to get millimetre-fine precision in the placement of graphics and how the site reacted to user interaction.
Mapping their artwork in such a way that the shopping basket and payment processing method was as accurate to their vision as possible created the most issues. Windows within windows needed to display items in a precise manner. Their bespoke font type also meant the need for embedding graphics yet ensuring they could be read easily on screen.
The client provided us with all their images, custom photographed to give the high quality look their product deserved. Terms of Use and Privacy Policy pages had to be designed in such a way that they scrolled within the main centre window. The experience Juniper Hill wanted for their users was one of minimal mouse movement, as little or no scrolling of the browser window as possible and one of visual clarity.
It's unusual to meet a client with such clear ideas about what they want their site to look like. In some ways it makes life easier, but in many ways it makes life considerably harder. The effort that needs to go into precise placement and meeting a concept from scratch is a huge challenge. However, we're delighted with the final result. More importantly, so were Juniper Hill Candles.
