TWITTER HASHTAGS FOR WEB DESIGNERS

We all have our favourites hashtags on Twitter and after a while it isn't difficult to become blinkered in respect of what we search for. However, hashtags offer a mass of opportunity to web designers and we've set out to identify the tags of most value.

There are a lot more than are listed here, we know that. If you want to let us know of a tag that you think other designers should follow, drop up a line.

#adobe – often preferred by those who might otherwise use the Photoshop tag, add it to your list

#ajax – particularly if you like snippets, a must-use tag

#asp – a little over populated with job advertisements for our liking, but it occasionally reveals items of interest

#bing – rising like a rocket on a mission, check it

#blogger – sift out some of the stuff and it’s often very worthwhile looking

#chrome – getting busier by the day

#cms – instead of using a product name, try this

#code – seems a little generic to many, but it is used a lot more than you might imagine

#css – a very busy tag offering some of the best items Twitter users have to offer.

#design – dropping the web prefix, similar content

#firefox – often forgotten as a tag but the home of many a superb add-on or tip

#flash – essential for those with a penchant for Flash #google – mandatory, surely?

#hashtags – a prerequisite!

#html – a popular tag often harbouring one or two little gems a day

#icons – well worth a look every few days, perhaps even daily

#ie – if you like solving problems for fellow users, check this tag

#internet – for a wider view on the web, you’ll find masses of posts here

#javascript – used frequently by those in the know, and rarely disappoints

#jquery – a favourite of many, make sure you monitor it

#mootools – one of the quieter web design tags but worth checking each week

#mysql – we warned you – very, very busy!

#opensource – the haven of a small group of users by comparison, but interesting nonetheless

#opera – popular right now with a new Opera release on the horizon, but always a regular tag

#perl – a little over saturation by some posters, but worth a look

#photoshop – if you’re not using this tag, you’ll soon see why you should be

#php – another favourite of the masses in web design, the PHP tag sees lots of traffic and lots of very valuable information

#safari – very busy indeed

#search – give it a go, now and again you’ll find posts that need retweeting and bookmarking

#sem – little used in comparison to SEO, but with a different type of posting in many cases it is worth using

#seo – we find there is a lot of duplicate content under SEO, but it is still essential

#socialmedia – some of the most interesting content on Twitter in our opinion

#twitter – don’t tell us you don’t use it?

#web – somewhat obviously

#webdesign – even more obviously!

#webmaster – we don’t like this word, but some choose to use it still and you should search it now and again

#wordpress – prepare for an avalanche of posts when you search for it

#wp – sometimes used by those who can’t be bothered with the full tag (#wordpress)

#www – surprisingly quiet, and sometimes the home of diamond posts

#xml – one of the quiet web tags, but often the place to find some very interesting posts

The Busy Tags

Before you start using some of these tags you should prepare yourself for the onslaught of the most popular.

The #design tag currently ranks around the Top 50 on Twitter, so you can expect well over 11,000 results in a 24 hours period. It’ll keep you busy!

The #photoshop tag sees huge traffic too, around the 4,500 mark. Great if you’re a Photoshop addict, a little tiring if you don’t narrow your search.

Surprisingly, #jquery is a tag not too far behind – and in our opinion one of the best by far. The #wordpress tag has a very wide appeal too, though you’ll find it tends to be web designers or the most dedicated of bloggers that use it most.

Perhaps expectedly, #socialmedia sees a lot of activity and we think it offers well above average in the worth of its content. There are some excellent articles to be found from those in the technology fields and if you want to get a view on what many peoples vision of the future of this media is – this is the tag to check.

Keeping them organised

Our preference is TweetDeck. If you’re going to harvest the wealth of posts that Twitter gives a web designer we think TweetDeck offers the best interface and most configurable option possible. One of our employees has a preference for DestroyTwitter.
