When was your first time online?

How to win with Twitter

In a recent test to see how valuable Twitter could be as a resource finder, and find where its real value (or any) as an SEO tool was, we monitored any links posted to Icon resources over a 24 hour period. The results were then filtered for duplicates or re-tweets and compiled into a single list.

The results are very impressive. One simple search using hashtags (#icons) revealed over 5,000 high quality icons or varying subject matter. What's more, the type of people that post these links tends to mean that their relative value is high - because very few low quality links get retweeted or attention on Twitter.

So, here is the list. Make sure you read our featured right-hand column on this page too - because you'll discover the real message behind this. The exercise served as a valuable mini-survey into just how much useful information you can find on Twitter - and over a very short period of time too, but more importantly it gives a better understanding of why Twitter contributes to SEO in many more ways than may be immediately apparent.

Spread the Word

Twitterific SEO

Think about this carefully - every link you see opposite this column was posted in a 24 hour period.

They were all revealed by a mere hashtags search for #icons.

Applying the same search method to any range of words, with or without hashtags, is a superb way of finding a plethora of links, resources and information that standard Google searching cannot format in such an easy to read style.

Google would give you a variety of well optimised sites that commercial organisations want you to see. You'll get a few resources of value given too, but finding freely available resources of the volume Twitter users will give you is well beyond even the best of Googlemeisters.

Make it work for you.

This brings us to the two-way value of such resources. If you just want to use resources, freely take what is given to you and give nothing back - then Twitter will still benefit you.

However, if you partake in giving - Twitter will reward like very few other sites will.

Links to valuable resources get retweeted, we all know that. Beyond that is where the real value is hidden - links that get copied and pasted in a myriad of other locations, direct links to content and in particular to your site. We're not talking about the value of backlinks here, we're talking about the value of brand exposure and a reputation for giving more than you take.

Trying to put worth on this is pointless. It's an intangible of the web that stands head and shoulders above anything monetary. Use hashtags to promote the direct subject matter of your links. Target your readers and don't be afraid of asking them to tell you what they want. What better way to assess what to give an audience than to ask them?

Try it now

When you've finished reading this - go to your bookmarks and find a resource, article or website that you find of value. Tweet it. Reference it on your own website and share it. Don't think of any immediate monetary or followers gain - think of building your brand, your reputation as a site of valued content and your willingness to build the web that Google is so keen to promote.

The value of Twitter doesn't end when someone clicks on your link and reads your content - it's when it begins.

Because, without knowing it - you're immediately following the No.1 Google SEO ethic - you're writing valued content that others come to. Keep doing that and it'll out perform all other forms of SEO you can ever engage in.
